Introduction:

In April of 2014, researchers at The Ohio State University College of Public HealthDivision of Environmental Health Sciences under the direction Dr. Darryl B. Hood created the Mappler portal specifically for residents of the Stambaugh-Elwood community in Columbus, Ohio (zip code 43207).

Purpose:

  1. Show how environmental and socio-demographic variables, potentially impact the quality of life for residents in this Southern Gateway community.
  2. Provide residents with a resource for self-education on information regarding potential environmental hazards within their neighborhood. In this way, empowering them with a knowledge base to advocate for their own circumstances and health.
  3. Provide a primary vehicle for introduction of environmental literacy programs for residents and community leaders towards mitigating environmental injustice issues.
  4. Creation of a portal for residents to upload and share their own residential environmental data and network with other local stakeholders involved in similar advocacy initiatives.

Methods:

A customized Mappler portal was created utilizing a Citizen Science Geographic Information Systemsapproach (CSGIS). Features of the portal include:

  1. Community mapping of the Stambaugh-Elwood Community
  2. Inclusion of Southern Gateway Health Indicators from the ODH
  3. Infant mortality data from Columbus Public Health
  4. PM5data from NASA MODIS Satellite
  5. Toxic Release Inventory data from the USEPA
  6. Census track and zip code data from CDC-Wonder
  7. Additional features to allow residents to upload individual residential environmental contaminant data
